Leather vs. Fabric Sofa

Out of the many decisions that you are faced with when considering a new sofa, one of the biggest decisions can be whether you choose a to buy a leather or fabric sofa.

Whilst leather offers a clean, sophisticated and modern look that’s easy to maintain, you can sometimes be restricted on things such as colour, unlike fabric that offers you thousands of colour and pattern combinations to fit in with your existing or planned décor. Having said that, fabric does take a little more care and attention to maintain its great looks. There are pros and cons with both but lets look at these in a little more detail.

Leather Sofa Pros

  • Most leather types such as semi aniline and corrected grain are easy to keep clean. A damp cloth is usually all that is needed to wipe your sofa down.

  • Leather is a very durable material and can outlive a fabric by many years if cared for properly.

  • Has a clean, sophisticated and modern look.

  • Leather comes in a variety of types to suit your budget, and also your home lifestyle.

Leather Sofa Cons

  • Leather can be easily scratched.

  • Some people find leather is cold to the touch.

  • Not as much colour choices as fabric.

Fabric Sofa Pros

  • Many more colour and pattern options available.

  • It has a warm, cosy and inviting look.

  • Comes in many different types, all with different textures.

  • Some fabric sofas have removable covers allowing them to be professionally cleaned.

Fabric Sofa Cons

  • Can be easily stained by food and drink.

  • Not as durable as leather

  • Can sometimes look dated
